This is the kind of debate we’ve had before. Gavin Newsom is struggling with a $31.5 billion budget deficit. The state is trying to further reduce that number by adding undocumented people to Medicaid rolls without the federal matching money that states receive for other forms of Medicaid expansion. Now, according to the latest comparative figures for 2021, this has fallen to 8.1%. Before Obamacare, more than 20% of the population under the age of 65 had no insurance. But DeSantis apparently still decided there was little political upside to expanding Medicaid using mostly federal money.Ĭalifornia moved in the opposite direction.
